of the week

Tony Capstick would have been 80 years old this week.

Joseph Anthony Capstick was born in Rotherham and was a comedian, actor and broadcaster. He became a regular on the folk club circuit around the west Riding area of Yorkshire. He had small roles in both Emmerdale and Coronation street and many will remember him as the policeman in the sitcom Last of the Summer Wine. In the 1970s and 8s, he occasionally presented folk music show on Radio 2.

He also had his own radio show on which ran until January 2003. He died in October the same year.

In 1981, he recited the story Capstick Comes Home over the Dvorak’s Largo which is more famous as the music for the Hovis bread advert on television. It was championed by Noel Edmonds on his Radio 1 show and became a hit reaching number three in April 1981. He even got on to Top of the Pops. Let’s remember that performance in an episode introduced by Richard Skinner.
