Joe Jackson is 70 years old this week.

He was born David Jackson in Burton upon Trent, but grew up in Portsmouth. As a teenager, he formed his first band called Edward Bear later becoming Arms and Legs before embarking on a solo career in 1979.  He renamed himself Joe because he thought he had a resemblance to Joe 90.

His first hit was Is She Really Going Out With Him and was swiftly followed by It’s Different For Girls. Two years later he changed direction and recorded a swing album as a tribute to the jazz singers Cab Calloway and Louis Jordan.

In 2003, he teamed up with William Shatner to record a cover of Pulp’s hit Common People.

Let’s enjoy this 1984 collaboration with Elaine Caswell on the minor hit Happy Ending.
