of the week

League 61 has just reached its conclusion and the winner, for only the second time, is Neil B. Congratulations to Neil who will receive his trophy early in the new year. Neil last won league number two back in 2009. Also many congratulations go to ridoutnj who ended up in 84th place having done all 12 weeks and they will receive their ‘extra’ prize in the next few days.

The new format has really changed things around which is good and well received by many judging by the emails and comments I’ve received, even from the seasoned players. Naturally, there are a tiny number of people who didn’t like it and found time to complain on social media, but hey, I can’t please everyone! There were a few who didn’t initially like it, but then came round to it and now enjoy it. Just for those who haven’t yet noticed, each question has its own time limit based on length of question and whether it includes a visual or an audio, if they have, more time has been added and the audio ones extended to include the length of the audio piece.

Also, it’s lovely to see four females in the top 30, two of them in the top five.

I’m adding a new feature for the next league and you can read about that below, but first the stats with a PDF attached for those who like to keep track.

Total who took part                 = 303

Total who did all 12 weeks     = 163

Total who did all 11 weeks     = 45

Total who did all 10 weeks     = 29

Total who did one week         = 13    (this included one or two who didn’t like the format)

A big welcome to the 16 new people who joined during league 61.

Single of the week

Eight suggestions came in during the last league and all have been written but not all published yet, they’re coming soon. If you have a suggestion for a song that you would like to know the story or origins of, please let me know via return email or from the website and I’ll get to work researching and writing.

Free quiz reminder

Less people forgot the do a week or two during the last league, probably because they set the reminder. Now, if you have a tendency to forget, then why not set the reminder? To do this, log in as usual, click ‘change account details’ and click on ‘quiz reminder’, then you set the day and time you would like an email reminder, then remember to click ‘save’ before exiting. If you happen to do the quiz prior to the reminder then you won’t get one.

New feature

Following a suggestion during league 61, it was asked if each week’s quiz can be done on a timer as well as each question. At the moment, if you do the quiz just after midday on the Sunday and, say, score eight, you will always be at the top of the eights and can only be knocked down by anyone who gets a nine or 10. This will no longer be the case, if you log on at the end of the week and get eight, but do it in the quickest time, you’ll go to the top of the eights. The time taken will be displayed next to your score. This will hopefully help those who are unable to take the quiz until later in the week. It will also make it highly unlikely there will be anymore tied positions at the top of the board as well as making the pre-picked number more accurate.

Problems with the quiz

One or two people had an issue with the quiz during last league and didn’t let me know and thus was not reset. Just to remind those who have managed to read this far, I don’t get a notification if it fails, so if you encounter a problem and get a zero score, you need to let me know so it can be reset.

Username not recognised:

If you haven’t done the quiz for a whole league, the system will delete your login details, so if you experience this, you just need to re-register and you are able to use any previous details you’ve used before.

There is no online quiz this week not next week, but league 62 will begin on Sunday week, 5th January 2025. Let your friends know and invite them to join in. An email will be sent on the morning of the 5th as a reminder.

I wish you all a very happy Christmas, a peaceful and safe New Year and enjoy a quiz-free fortnight.

 Regards

Jon
